Trend Report: Designing a Healthy Home Environment
Miele appliances offer features vital to maintaining a healthy home
Princeton, NJ – June 2010
Trend Fact: Creating a healthy home environment is one of the hottest topics today and one that designers are taking the lead on as true influencers when working with clients. The healthy home can be defined as a combination of environmental consciousness, safety awareness and overall cleanliness or hygienic conditions. As consumers, we are not immune to the increase in flow of home health messages regarding organic cleaning solutions, antibacterial surfaces, low VOCs, etc. Experts such as author and WebMD blogger, Christopher Gavigan strategically combines these concepts into his blog on the Healthy Home. “The home is our safety zone,” states Paul McCormack, Director of Public Relations for Miele. “Everything comes to a point in the home – creating a cleaner, safer environment for ourselves, for our children and for the planet. That’s why Miele designs every appliance we make with a healthy home in mind.”
In fact, Architect James Chuda and his wife Nancy Chuda have formed the website http://healthychild.org to help make homes safer for children. According to Nancy Chuda, home environmental activist, “This is one of the most important public health and environmental movements of the 21st Century.”
“Many homes new and old have unseen contaminants that can negatively affect the health of a home,” said Nelson E. Fabian, Executive Director and CEO of National Environmental Health Association. “Asthma, cancer and a variety of other health conditions can result from contaminants in the home,” added Fabian. “Homes are an ecosystem. As a result, every component of that system including HVAC, pest control, cleaning, water treatment, and more, must be carefully reviewed to keep families safe and healthy.” (Source http://www.healthyhouseinstitute.com)
The following provides a few examples of how Miele appliances enhance the healthy home environment and lifestyle:
COOKING
Steam Ovens
The Miele convection steam oven’s multi-level cooking chamber lets families cook an entire meal simultaneously in about 20 minutes. Steam has long been established as the healthiest method of cooking as it seals in all the flavors, color, texture, vitamins and minerals. And, because steam cooking doesn’t require fatty oils and sauces, meals are lower in fat and healthier for the entire family. Scientific studies performed at the German universities, Giessen and Koblenz-Landau, confirm this and proved less vitamins, minerals and trace elements are lost in steam cooking than in any other conventional cooking method. This applies to fresh produce as well as frozen food. Broccoli, for example, when cooked in a Miele convection steam oven, showed 50% higher levels of vitamin C than samples boiled in water.
Ventilation Hoods
Very few people realize that the smoke and airborne chemicals released while cooking can be detrimental to respiratory health, which is why adequate air-cleansing systems are so important. Miele’s powerfully quiet ventilation hoods help purify air near cooking surfaces – filtering and in the case of ducted systems – removing the contaminated air from the home environment. The process of eliminating unhealthy gases becomes especially important when people fry their food. When heated, oils splatter and become airborne. In addition, when food becomes even slightly overcooked, it emits carcinogenic smoke.
Induction Cooktops
Induction cooking is highly reactive for precision cooking and remarkably safe. The induction element stays cool, while the target object heats up rapidly. As soon as the pan is removed, the flow of heat stops immediately. Miele’s safety cut-out feature detects spills and foreign objects – such as a dishtowel – which shuts the cooktop off automatically to prevent accidental burning or igniting. As an extra safety precaution, the cooktop has pre-programmed maximum operating times which depend on the power level being used. The cooktop will switch itself off automatically if this duration is exceeded, when a pan is in place and the power setting has not been altered. A child lock can also disable the cooktop by simply touching the lock symbol when the cooktop is in use. This acts as a safety lock, preventing any unwanted changes to settings. It can also be activated as a system lock when the cooktop is not in use to prevent children from operating it.
Clean Touch Steel™
Miele’s innovative Clean Touch Steel finish stands up to aggressive handling while resisting fingerprints, scratches and smudges – keeping the exterior cleaner and easier to maintain. There’s no use of harsh chemicals or special polishes… Clean Touch Steel™ cleans up quickly with a damp cloth.
CLEANING
Miele Vacuum Cleaners
According to recent independent tests, there’s no other vacuum on the planet that removes dust, dirt and allergens as efficiently as a Miele canister or upright. Miele’s unique combination of AirClean™ Filter-bag™, certified HEPA filter and Sealed System™ design is 99.99% effective in capturing lung-damaging particles. The key to this design is its hygienic self-closing AirClean™ Filter-bag™ whose revolutionary multi-ply filtering material helps homeowners dispose of the captured particles without coming in contact with them. G 2002 Dishwashers
For a home to be really healthy its dishware shouldn’t just look clean – it should be hygienically clean. Temperatures must be high enough to remove germs from baby bottles, chopping boards or cutlery. Miele dishwashers promise a healthier, more hygienic clean. From their CleanAir™ drying system, to their third-level cutlery tray that separates items for superior washing to their SaniWash program, Miele’s dishwashers provide you with the total confidence that appropriate sanitization levels are met. And, only Miele dishwashers are backed by a 90-day money back guarantee for cleaning performance and quiet operation.
Professional Dishwashers
The Miele G 7859 dishwasher is NSF/ANSI-3 approved for its high temperature sanitization – which includes a final rinse at 185o F. Miele is currently the only company offering a commercial dishwasher utilizing a freshwater system that is NSF/ANSI 3 approved by the National Sanitation Foundation. The G 7859 dishwasher is perfect for commercial establishments such as restaurants, wineries, cafes, bars and community kitchens and busy estate homes that require quick turnaround – 10 minutes or less – of table and glassware.
Laundry Systems
Caring for the family’s laundry means more than just getting out those stains. In many cases it requires special treatment of sheets, towels and undergarments to ensure hygienic results are met – killing invisible germs and bacteria. Miele’s special Sanitize program raises the wash temperature to 160o F to effectively sanitize those items. There’s even a program option that adds an additional final rinse to wash away detergent residue and scents for those who have sensitive skin or allergies.
Miele Professional offers true commercial grade laundry products that are equipped with unique programs that reach and hold a maximum temperature of 200o F. The “Little Giants” commercial laundry set (washer model PW 6065 / dryer model PT 7136) also has four disinfection programs with temperature varying from 105o F to 185o F to properly and hygienically treat a wide range of fabric types.
